Solar cells & panels

Busbar generation sets the silver content. Older cells — thick, wide, 2–3 busbars, pre-2012 — carry on the order of 100 mg each. Modern cells are 10–15 mg. Busbarless and SMBB cells with 12–16 hairline wires carry the least.

How to spot it

Blue or black square/pseudo-square silicon wafers, 156–210 mm, with fine silver finger lines and busbars, series-linked by tinned copper ribbon under glass. Watch for thin-film: a uniform brownish or dark film with no visible individual cells and thin scribe lines. CdTe modules contain cadmium telluride — route to the manufacturer's take-back; do not break, cut or grind them.

Metal content

MetalQuantityNotes

Base metal2–3 kg aluminium frame, Cu ribbon

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $9.50 per pound of contained metal — Silver 5 g = $9.50. A refiner paying $4 returns about 42% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Whole panels go to a specialty PV recycler. Cell-level silver extraction needs nitric acid and isn't economic at hobby scale.

Hazards

☠ Cadmium

NEVER grind, burn, torch or braze cadmium-plated or AgCdO material, and don't inhale the black contact dust.

🩹 Glass and sharps

NEVER blow on, wipe with bare fingers, or brush away cut optical fibre.

☠ Lead — dust more than fume

NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.

The common trap

"20 grams of silver per panel" gets quoted constantly, but 90% of a panel's weight is glass and aluminium, so the $/lb is poor and delamination usually costs more than the silver is worth. A panel in daylight is live — cover it before disconnecting.
