Twelve e-waste myths that cost people real money

Nearly every inflated figure in this hobby comes from one of three errors: confusing grams per pound with grams per unit, ignoring the date code, or forgetting that most of what is on the scale is dead weight.

1. Hard drive platters contain recoverable platinum

The most persistent myth in e-scrap. The magnetic layer is a cobalt-platinum-chromium film about thirty nanometres thick — a maximum of roughly 2.2 mg of platinum per 3.5-inch platter, which is about twelve cents. One refiner's own summary is that it takes an hour of your time and three cents of chemicals to reclaim ten cents of platinum. Refiners pay $0.25 a pound. The mirror surface is not gold and never was.

2. A Pentium Pro contains a gram of gold

The real figure is 0.25–0.45 g, with 0.33 g the reliable midpoint. Sellers price them on the myth.

3. A Pentium 4 holds 0.2–0.5 g of gold

Off by five to ten times. Plastic processors with gold pins hold 0.03–0.06 g each. The gold is pin plating and substrate traces, nothing more.

4. Ceramic capacitors are 2–5% palladium

True only of chips made before about 1990. Applied to a modern desktop board harvest, that figure overstates by ten to forty times. The industry moved to nickel electrodes between roughly 1998 and 2005, and the parts look nearly identical — manufacturers admit as much.

5. Oxygen sensors are loaded with platinum, palladium and rhodium

They contain about 13 mg of platinum, no palladium, and trace or no rhodium. The arithmetic settles it: refiners pay around $3 a pound and roughly four sensors make a pound, so 75 cents a sensor — which matches 13 mg of platinum almost exactly. The widely repeated "0.1 to 0.2 grams" would be eight dollars of metal, and no refiner would buy that at $3 a pound.

6. Iridium spark plugs are worth a couple of dollars in metal

The tip is smaller than a grain of salt — 0.6 to 3 mg, about 56 cents at best, inside a 28-gram steel body that costs more to freight than it yields. The exception is aviation fine-wire plugs, which carry 50–200 mg and have a real overhaul market.

7. Airbags contain gold and silver

They contain an explosive charge and a legal problem. The initiator's gold is measured in micrograms. Inflators are federally regulated hazardous waste and selling used ones is a criminal offence in several US states.

8. Gold-plated HDMI and USB connectors are high grade

The shiny shells are nickel-plated steel. The contacts carry a two to eight microinch flash. A whole USB-A jack holds a few tenths of a milligram of gold.

9. Nickel silver shield cans contain silver

Nickel silver contains no silver at all — it is a copper-nickel-zinc alloy. And roughly half the shield cans in circulation are simply tin-plated steel.

10. Reed relays contain rhodium

Technically true and practically worthless. The plating is sub-micron.

11. LEDs are gold-rich because they have gold bond wire

One bond wire weighs about twenty micrograms. A pound of 5 mm LEDs is roughly 1,800 parts holding perhaps 0.04 g of gold in total — under ten dollars, and the epoxy burn costs more than that in effort.

12. Stripping the gold plating off boards is worth doing

Electroless nickel immersion gold contributes about 0.025 g of gold per pound of board. To accumulate one troy ounce you would process roughly 1,250 pounds. That same 1,250 pounds sold intact at even a low mid-grade rate is about four thousand dollars — approximately the value of the ounce you would have extracted, except you also keep the copper, silver and palladium, and you buy no chemicals and handle no hazardous waste. The smelter pays you for that gold anyway.

Do hard drive platters contain platinum?

Barely. A 3.5-inch platter holds at most about 2.2 mg in a thirty-nanometre film, worth roughly twelve cents. Refiners pay a quarter per pound. Aluminium platters are aluminium scrap and glass ones are worthless.

How much gold is really in a Pentium Pro?

About 0.25 to 0.45 grams, with 0.33 grams the commonly cited midpoint. The frequently repeated figure of one gram is roughly triple the real value.

Is there platinum in oxygen sensors?

About 13 milligrams per sensor, worth well under a dollar. Claims of 0.1 to 0.2 grams are wrong by roughly ten times, as refiner buy prices of around three dollars a pound demonstrate.
