Your first teardown: a beginner's walkthrough

You do not need chemistry, a shop, or much money to start. You need a screwdriver, somewhere to sort, and the discipline to check part numbers before anything goes in a bucket.

Start with a desktop computer

An old tower is the ideal first teardown. It has one of almost everything, nothing on it is under pressure or holding a lethal charge except the power supply, and every component type it contains appears again in more valuable equipment later.

The tool list that actually matters

Everything else — hot air station, preheat plate, shears, scale — comes later and only when volume justifies it. Do not buy a refining setup. Almost nobody should be doing wet chemistry, and the sorting skill is where your actual edge lies.

The order of operations

  1. Unplug it and leave the power supply alone for now. Bulk capacitors hold lethal charge for a long time.
  2. Pull the expansion cards, memory and processor. These are the most valuable items and they come out cold with no tools beyond a screwdriver.
  3. Remove the CMOS coin cell. Before any heat ever touches the board.
  4. Pull the drives. Hard drives with clean SMART are worth far more working than as scrap.
  5. Separate the case. Steel to ferrous, aluminium separately, and pull every steel screw out of any aluminium you want graded as clean.
  6. The power supply last, and discharge it properly before opening it.

The five mistakes beginners make

  1. Scrapping things that work. A processor is fifty cents as scrap and $15–80 tested. A graphics card is twelve dollars as scrap and often three hundred working. Check the part number on every single thing before it goes in a bucket. This one mistake outweighs all the others combined.
  2. Not sorting. Gold-edge memory pays $50 a pound. The same sticks with heat spreaders still on pay $18. Mixed memory can pay negative. Sorting is where the money is, not chemistry.
  3. Chasing the heavy stuff. Heatsinks and cases feel valuable because they are heavy. Clean aluminium is around $0.65 a pound. A single ceramic processor from the same machine can be worth more than the entire chassis.
  4. Burning things. Insulation, boards, plastic. It destroys the grade, it is illegal in most places, and the smoke is genuinely toxic.
  5. Shipping too early. Freight and lot minimums will eat a small shipment alive. Accumulate a category until it justifies the postage.

What to ignore entirely

Film capacitors, carbon resistors, ferrite beads, most connectors, aluminium electrolytics, and anything on a brown phenolic board. These are not close calls — a pound of film resistors holds about fifteen cents of marginal copper. Leave them on the board and sell the board.

Where to sell as a beginner

Working parts go to the general marketplaces. Sorted scrap categories go to mail-in grade buyers who publish their rates — you know the price before you ship, minimums are measured in dollars, and payment arrives in days. Assay-based refining requires thousands of pounds and is not a beginner route.

The one thing to avoid is buying scrap from other hobbyists. Gold fingers and pins routinely sell above their full contained metal value on auction sites. That market is excellent to sell into and a guaranteed loss to buy into.
