The generation label on the bezel is the entire decision — Ultrium 6/7/8/9 is a $200–5,000 working asset; DLT, DDS, AIT or Travan is $20 of metal and plastic.
How to spot it
LTO drives are 5.25 in half-height (146 × 82 × 205 mm) or full-height with a rectangular slot-load door, an LED or LCD status panel, and a rear SFF-8482/8644 SAS, LC fibre-channel or VHDCI SCSI connector; the bezel is marked Ultrium with a generation number. Library-sled drives sit in a metal carrier with a blind-mate connector. Libraries are 1U–5U chassis with a barcode-reader robot, removable magazines and a management LCD. DLT uses a single-reel cartridge with a take-up leader; DDS is 4 mm helical-scan with a visible drum.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $4.02 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.03 g = $3.92, Copper 10 g = $0.11. A refiner paying $2 returns about 50% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.
Safe removal
Working temperature: No heat; sticky-shed tape baking 50–55 °C, never above 60 °C
Nothing to remove — read the drive's error and usage log first. An ITDT or HP L&TT scan takes five minutes and turns an untested $200 drive into a verified healthy, 400-hour $450 drive. If genuinely scrapping: 4–6 chassis screws, lift the main PCB (one ZIF flex to the head, one power connector), and split the aluminium chassis with a T10/T15. Do not disassemble the head/tape-path module — it is the only reason the drive has value.
Hazards
A standard ABC extinguisher will NOT stop a runaway lithium cell. Don't count on one.
Don't let two magnet plates snap together across your fingers.
NEVER dry-cut boards indoors without extraction.

Sell libraries complete with magazines, both PSUs and rails — a complete unit is worth 2–3× its stripped parts.
