How to spot it
The formatter is the board in a removable metal cage on the rear or side carrying the network and USB ports, a DIMM slot and a large BGA ASIC; the DC controller is the bigger board deeper inside with many white connectors and no ports. The fuser is a black plastic module 30–40 cm wide with two rollers, a mains connector, spring latches and a moulded HOT SURFACE warning. A toner chip is a 15 × 20 mm green or black PCB with 2–8 exposed gold pads clipped into a recess on the cartridge.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $6.52 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.045 g = $5.87, Copper 60 g = $0.64. A refiner paying $2.5 returns about 38% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.
Safe removal
Working temperature: Fuser surfaces 180–220 °C in service — cool 30 min
Let the fuser cool 30+ minutes, release the two blue latches or thumbscrews and pull straight out. The formatter is 2–4 cage screws plus ribbon and flat-flex connectors. Prise toner chips with a small flat screwdriver. If reusing a halogen fuser lamp, grip the ceramic ends only — skin oils devitrify quartz. To scrap a fuser: cut the mains lead, pull the lamp intact, strip the aluminium roller cores.
Hazards
NEVER dry-cut boards indoors without extraction.
Don't rush a hot engine. Nothing here is worth a hand.
NEVER short a large capacitor with a screwdriver. It welds the tip, blasts molten metal at your face, and can rupture the can.
NEVER grind, burn, torch or braze cadmium-plated or AgCdO material, and don't inhale the black contact dust.
NEVER blow on, wipe with bare fingers, or brush away cut optical fibre.
A standard ABC extinguisher will NOT stop a runaway lithium cell. Don't count on one.
