Instrument clusters & head units

Turn it over and look for a gold-coloured edge-connector comb on the board. That's the only genuinely gold-bearing part, and it only exists on pre-2008 units. On anything newer the resale is 50× the metal — sell it whole.

How to spot it

Cluster is the gauge pod behind the wheel with a lens, stepper motors and an LCD odometer, part number on a rear label. Head unit is the DIN or double-DIN box in the centre stack, or on modern cars a separate amplifier module in the trunk or under a seat with a screen up front.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $9.79 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.05 g = $6.53, Palladium 0.04 g = $1.65, Copper 80 g = $0.86, Silver 0.4 g = $0.76. A refiner paying $3 returns about 31% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: Cold

Battery off. Use plastic pry wedges on the dash bezel — a screwdriver marks the trim and kills the resale. 7/8/10 mm screws or T20 Torx, DIN removal keys for older radios. Cluster ribbon cables are fragile and a torn ribbon is a dead sale.

Hazards

🌡 Mercury

NEVER vacuum a mercury spill — it aerosolises it. Use a mercury spill kit or sulphur powder, or call your local hazmat line.

⚡ Stored high voltage

NEVER short a large capacitor with a screwdriver. It welds the tip, blasts molten metal at your face, and can rupture the can.

💣 Electrolytic capacitor rupture

Don't heat a capacitor directly with hot air at close range.

💥 Pyrotechnics — airbag inflators & pyro-fuses

NEVER open, cut, heat, drill, drop, shred or sell an inflator. There is no recoverable metal in one — the initiator's gold is measured in micrograms. Deploy-in-place by a trained handler, or hand it to the OEM collection stream.

Before you scrap it

Strong core item. Clusters $80–400, head units $40–600, against about $2 — that's 40–200×. Several firms run formal core-exchange programmes on GM 2003–06 and Ford Super Duty 2005–07 clusters specifically.

The common trap

"The dash cluster is full of gold" — it yields about two dollars of metal, while the identical cluster sells for $150 to somebody whose odometer stepper failed. Second trap: mileage and VIN-locked clusters. Buyers need the mileage disclosed and misrepresenting it is odometer fraud.
